First Expedition
The first expedition in 1967, soon after completing his Engineering studies, was more of an adventure by a young man driving from London to then West Germany to visit with friends. Next stop was in Spain, driving right through France non-stop. He crossed the Mediterranean at Tenerife, landed in Tangiers, Morocco. From there, he resumed his driving heading to Tarmangasset in Algeria, then to Agadez and Niamey in Niger Republic, from where he drove through to Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso. On crossing into Ghana, he made straight for Accra through Kumasi. In Accra, Ghana, he had a press conference hurriedly put together by some journalists who heard of his feat in crossing the Sahara alone in an old Volkswagen 1500cc.
