Second Expedition
The route for the 2000 Expedition was: Lagos – Akwukwu-Igbo –Kano, where he was officially flagged off by the Emir of Kano. The drive then proceeded to the desert through Niamey in Niger Republic. From there, he followed the same route as in the first trip, though in the opposite direction. However, there was no detour to Germany anymore. The journey ended in London with his wife who had flown in to join him in Alicante following his 12-day successful crossing of the Sahara Desert. The journey terminated in London after driving through Spain and France on March 12, 2000. Total trip time was 32 days. Distance covered was 12,000 km.
During the second expedition, 20km to Tarmangasset, he ran into a sand storm that got him blown off the road over 100 feet. He was dumped in a pit of sand over a sand dune. He scrambled out of his car but quickly went back inside to protect himself from the storm. He realized that the sand dune ditch he was thrown into protected him from being buried in the sand. In the fall, he got his right foot jammed between the gas and the brake pedals, straining his ankle in the process. He managed to dig out his car at the end of the sand storm but burnt out the clutch in the process. Through stabs of pain with every step, he walked 20km to Tarmangasset to get help to retrieve his car.
